CHAPTER 21

Ashton

As soon as they entered the city, they were surrounded by crowds. Every color of Suit, clothing, and lights exploded around them. Each individual was seemingly in a more outrageous outfit, skin color, and appearance than the next Suit; it truly was an alien world.

Bubble-like glass balls slowly moved above them, casting a shadow over the Suits below. As the music pulsed, so did the lights inside glass spheres. Ashton stood staring at half-human, half-animal Suits who swam around within them. The sky above mesmerized Ashton with its contortionist show of bubbles.

Next to her, a tall Suit with high heels and a cone-shaped headdress wrapped into her braids bumped into them. Sheva and Ashton just stared. The Suit had dark green skin and large bug-like eyes. As they walked toward the large crowd, they thought their best bet was to get in the middle of it all.

“So this is Venus?” Ashton whispered to Sheva.

“We are in Constellation, the city inside Venus Park,” Sheva whispered back. “It’s an entire park modeled after life in space. Aliens and stuff.”

Lining the streets were carts and stands selling souvenirs, squishy-looking creatures in water, pink jelly foods, and blue cocktails. Workers screamed at the crowd to come look at their tiny trinkets and unique food choices. This place was like nothing Ashton had ever seen. There were curly tree branches with thick winding trunks. They were not like the ones from Land of Legend’s forest or Maya Bay. Most had deep blue trunks and bright yellow leaves with ladders going up toward tiny huts. Workers hung around them.

Behind the trees were buildings, balconies with circular white windows and neon colors spotting the entire building. Signs flashed off every empty surface. The night sky was strikingly dark compared to the streets that lit up this park.

Ashton and Sheva continued through the city, trying to move more quickly now that the awe of the city had worn off. This wasn’t the time to admire. They needed to hide.

Something touched Ashton’s arm and yanked her to the side. Defensively, Ashton whipped to the side and crouched into a fighting stance, ready to protect herself and Sheva.

“Come on!” the voice yelled, and it was familiar.

“Hunter!” Ashton almost yelled and relaxed. “Get off me,” Ashton said, more animated than she intended.

“Don’t do this now. Just come on,” Hunter said, giving Ashton a darting look as he glanced around to make sure Ashton and Sheva weren’t being followed.

He dragged them across the main street toward one of the tall, dark-brown buildings with neon lights rotating around it. Ashton hadn’t seen Wolfe since they had reached the city, but her bet was that he was heading her way and that Hunter was right to hurry them along.

“Thank goodness you guys made it!” Versal hugged Ashton as they entered a small alley where the group was hiding. “We were so worried.” She squeezed Ashton tighter.

Ashton’s response was not warm, but she suppressed her resentment. They had left her and Sheva behind. But she restrained her anger; if this was going to work, she still needed them.
